Capacity Building for National TBT related structures in the Gambia

The first project of the ACP-EU TBT Programme was launched on February 6th 2014, when the kick off meeting for the project in support to Gambia TBT related structure was carried out at the Programme premises in Brussels. The two experts, Mr. Nichodemus Rudaheranw and Mr. Folke Hermansson Snickars had the opportunity to discuss key project features and implementation modalities with the PMU and collect all key project’s information and contacts.
The beneficiary is the Ministry of Trade, Industry, Regional Integration and Employment (MOTIE) that has the overall responsibility for trade and competition policies in the Gambia, and takes the lead role in trade negotiations in collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The project aims at strengthening the existing capacity of national institutions to comply with WTO/TBT requirements and will include:
- a needs-assessment of the national TBT related structures in the Gambia,
- a training for the National Notification Authority (MOTIE) and the National Enquiry Focal Point (TGSB) on Notification, Information issues and Dispute settlement under the TBT Agreement,
- a training for technical regulations committees in priority sectors (food, agriculture, electrotechnicals) on the elaboration and adoption of standards,
- a Workshop on the WTO TBT agreement dedicated to key national institutions (around 50 participants are expected).
On February 24th the experts have reached the beneficiary country and started the phase of needs assessment.
