IMPROVING COOPERATION IN TBT AND IN QUALITY INFRASTRUCTURE IN THE COMESA REGION

The ACP-EU TBT Programme organized the last 5th and 6th of September in Nairobi, Kenya, a regional workshop aiming at improving cooperation in TBT and in Quality Infrastructure in the COMESA (Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa) region. The seminar, officially opened by the Guest of Honour, Cabinet Secretary Ambassador Amina Muhamed, gathered 16 of the COMESA Member States and involved a number of key speakers such as Mr. Erik HABERS, Minister-Counsellor Head of Cooperation EUD Kenya; Mr. Thierry Mutombo, Director COMESA Investment Promotion and Private Sector Development (IPPSD); Mr. Nsengimana Hermogène, ARSO Secretary General.

The COMESA Programme relating to Standardisation, Accreditation, Metrology and Conformity Assessment was originally established as part of COMESA's agenda to move towards higher integration in the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa. Since then different QI regional bodies have been established and more recently COMESA has also proposed a Regional Policy on Standardization, Accreditation, Metrology and Conformity Assessment (SAMCA) which guides member States in the implementation of QI related activities.

With the support of a number presentations and discussions, the seminar succeeded to inform the COMESA Member States and the QI regional entities about: the latest developments of the Pan-African Quality Infrastructure sector, the EU tools such as the new Export Helpdesk and the objectives of the ACP-EU TBT Programme in order to assist the QI foundations already set and help the region to quickly move towards achieving greater international recognition.
